COURSE: Design of Stability Systems for Light Steel Framing
- 3 Parts: 8, 9 & 11 Dec 2025
- 10am-12pm
- Where: On-line Course
The SCI has prepared this 3 part course following the publication of the P437 guidance on the design for stability of light steel framed buildings. The course focuses on the design issues related to vertical stability provided by X-braced wall panels, integral bracing, or diaphragm action of sheathing boards. The course follows the process of addressing horizontal loading, including Equivalent Horizontal Forces (EHF), structural analysis of stability systems, and proposed test regimes. Every delegate will receive a PDF copy of "P437 - Design of Stability Systems for Light Steel Framing”
This course will explain:
- Horizontal loading and Equivalent Horizontal Forces (EHF)
- Structural analysis of stability systems
- Types of stability systems: X-bracing; Intergal bracing; Diaphragms
- Shear resistance of X-braced panels
- Limiting uplift forces due to horizontal actions
- Shear stiffness requirements for braced walls
- Use of narrow panels with integral C-sections
- Positioning of braced walls and combination with hot-rolled structural steel frames
- Effects of openings in panels
- Diaphragm action of sheathing boards
This course will equip any engineer or architect with:
- Design of stability for light steel framed buildings to the Eurocode and EN standards
- How to determine the shear resistance of X-braced panels
- A comprehensive understanding of limiting uplift forces in design
- Practical knowledge on ensuring shear stiffness under service loads
- Insights into using narrow bracing panels adjacent to openings
- Guidance on positioning braced walls and integrating them with structural frames
- Understanding of the lateral deflection behaviour in multi-storey light steel frames
- Test regime recommendations for sheathing board diaphragms based on BS EN 574
- A formula for extending test results to various wall dimensions
The course is aimed at structural designers, architects, and engineers involved with the conceptual design, detailed design, or stability assessment of light steel framed buildings.
